Solar Panel FAQ Ayrshire
Most standard pitched roofs in Ayrshire are suitable for solar panels. The main things we look at are your roof's orientation, pitch, available space, and whether there is any significant shading from trees or nearby buildings. We'll go over all of this when we provide your quote, so you'll know exactly what to expect before any work begins.
A properly sized solar system can reduce your electricity bills by up to 50%, sometimes more if you pair it with battery storage. Your actual savings depend on how much electricity you use, when you use it, and the size of the system fitted to your home. The more energy you use during daylight hours, the greater the benefit you'll see straight away.
Yes, solar panels generate electricity from daylight rather than direct sunshine, so cloudy days still contribute to your output. Scotland receives plenty of usable daylight throughout the year, and many homeowners across Ayrshire and the west coast are already benefiting from solar energy. Modern panels are built to perform in the kind of conditions we get here, not just in sunnier climates.
MCS stands for Microgeneration Certification Scheme, and it's the industry standard that governs solar installations in the UK. Choosing an MCS certified installer means your system is installed to a recognised quality standard, and it's a requirement if you want to receive Smart Export Guarantee payments from your energy supplier. It also means you have a clear route for any complaints if something goes wrong, which a non-certified installer cannot offer you.
Yes. Through the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), your energy supplier is required to pay you for any surplus electricity your panels send back to the grid. Your installation must be carried out by an MCS certified installer to qualify. Rates vary between suppliers, so it's worth comparing tariffs to get the most from your export payments.
For the majority of homes, solar panels fall under permitted development rights, meaning no planning permission is needed. There are exceptions, including listed buildings and properties within conservation areas, where additional restrictions may apply. We'll check this for your specific property as part of your quote, so there are no surprises later on.
A standard solar panel installation typically takes a single day to complete. Adding battery storage to your system may require an extra half day on top of that. Our team works cleanly and efficiently, and we'll confirm the expected timeframe with you when your installation is booked. Most customers are up and generating electricity by the end of the first day.
Solar panels come with manufacturer warranties of up to 25 years, which covers both product defects and performance. Inverters typically carry a warranty of 10 to 12 years, and battery storage systems are generally covered for around 10 years. On top of manufacturer warranties, our installations are backed by a workmanship guarantee, so the quality of the work itself is covered too.
Not at all. East and west-facing roofs can still generate a strong output, often around 85% of what a south-facing roof would produce. In some cases, panels on both sides of a roof can actually give you a more even spread of generation throughout the day. North-facing roofs are generally not suitable, but we'll give you an honest assessment based on your specific roof layout.
Solar panels need very little day-to-day attention, which is one of the reasons homeowners across Ayrshire find them such a practical investment. That said, a yearly clean and inspection is recommended to keep them running at full efficiency, as a build-up of dirt and debris can noticeably reduce output. Take a look at our solar panel maintenance page to find out what's included in our maintenance service.
A home battery storage system lets you hold onto the electricity your panels generate during the day and use it in the evening when the panels aren't producing. Without a battery, any surplus power is simply exported to the grid, earning you a small SEG payment. A battery lets you use a much greater proportion of your own solar energy, which makes a real difference to your bills if your household is mainly active in the evenings.
